When you call, the Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) staff person will ask what county you are calling from and where you'd like to see an attorney. The staff person will have you state your problem briefly (any information you provide will be held in the strictest confidence). You can submit your request electronically by clicking on the LRIS link, selecting a county and submitting the form that is provided.

The LRIS staff will listen to your problem and take your name, address and telephone number. If another resource is more appropriate for your situation, the LRIS staff will provide that information. If a referral to an attorney is called for, you will be given the name of a lawyer near you who practices in your area of need. If you emailed in your problem, the Service may need to contact you for additional details.

It will be your responsibility to contact the lawyer to make an appointment to discuss your legal problem. While the Service does confirm referrals in writing with you and the lawyer referred, it does not make appointments.

LRIS attorneys agree to provide an initial consultation of up to one-half hour for a $25 fee. Attorneys will give FREE consultations for personal injury matters, as well as medical malpractice, social security, unemployment and workers' compensation issues.

During the visit, you and the lawyer will discuss your case. If it is determined you do have a legal problem, it is up to you to make another appointment or to authorize the lawyer to take action on your problem. Any fees beyond the initial consultation fee will be decided between you and the lawyer.

Remember, if you have a legal problem, you should have legal representation. The Lawyer Referral and Information Service is designed to serve people who can afford the services of a lawyer. Those who have legal problems and cannot afford a lawyer should contact the Legal Aid Office in their community.
